Reading and research notes
The report is headed James McManus’ Funeral and datelined Oakland, July 30. It states that the funeral was held “this morning” at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with a solemn requiem high Mass. The dateline therefore places the reported funeral on 30 July 1906, not the issue date of 31 July.
The celebrant is printed as the Rev. E. C. Brockage, assisted by the Rev. Edward P. Dempsey and the Rev. J. J. Doran. Named active pallbearers include Sheriff Frank Barnet, John J. McDonald, George McDonald and P. Kistch (reading to verify), plus four others from San Francisco.
The report states that interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Unlike an advance funeral notice, it reports a completed interment. The cemetery register is still required for the section, plot, grave and ownership.
